Emergency COVID-19 Pivot

Mobilizing Community Support in a Crisis

The Challenge: Operational Continuity Amid Lockdown

In March 2020, the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic forced the Humane Society of the North Bay to completely close its doors to the public. While our community transitioned to remote work and navigated sudden economic uncertainties, the shelter faced an immediate operational crisis.

The homeless dogs and cats in our care still required daily feeding, medical attention, and hands-on sheltering. Simultaneously, intake numbers continued to rise as more vulnerable animals arrived at our facility daily. With traditional, in-person fundraising streams instantly wiped out, we had to rapidly pivot our strategy to secure emergency operational funding entirely online.

The Strategy: Direct, Transparent Crisis Messaging

Leveraging the Network for Good donor management system, I rapidly deployed a data-driven, multi-stage emergency email campaign. The core strategy relied on radical transparency, urgent copywriting, and rigorous performance tracking to capture the attention of a distracted, anxious audience.I structured the response into two critical waves:

Wave 1: The Initial Plea (Sent March 29, 2020)
  • Subject Line: COVID-19 Wreaks Havoc: Emergency Funds Needed

  • The Goal: Set the baseline situation for our donor base, transparently outlining the financial shortfall caused by the immediate lockdown.

  • Performance: Achieved a highly successful 32.8% open rate and a 4.8% click-through rate (CTR).

immediately following the shelter's public closure.

Wave 2: The Strategic Follow-Up (Sent April 8, 2020)
  • Subject Line: COVID-19 Consequences: Urgent Funds Needed

  • The Goal: Keep the momentum alive by sharing real-time consequences of the ongoing closure and creating a secondary touchpoint for those who missed the initial message.

  • Performance: This optimized follow-up significantly outperformed industry averages, climbing to an incredible 49.2% open rate and a 5.2% CTR.

The Impact: Sustaining Shelter Operations

By applying enterprise-level email segmentation and highly reactive copywriting, these two urgent digital appeals yielded massive grassroots results for our shelter:

  • $10,000+ total funds raised in a matter of days.

  • $167.00 average donation size, showcasing a deeply committed, high-value donor response.

This immediate influx of online capital successfully bridge-funded our daily animal care expenses, ensuring that our resident dogs and cats never saw a reduction in food, medicine, or love during the darkest days of the pandemic lockdown.
