Complete Website Modernization Project

The original homepage at launch featured Ike, who was adopted from the HSNB in December of 2020. Many other adopted pets were featured throughout the website, including three of my little dogs, who remain there today. 

The Challenge: Transforming an Outdated Digital Front Door

An animal shelter’s website is its most critical operational hub—serving as the primary engine for donor conversions, volunteer recruitment, and adoption velocity. The Humane Society of the North Bay’s (HSNB) legacy website faced significant user-experience bottlenecks, fragmented messaging, and an unoptimized donation pathway. To secure the shelter’s long-term digital sustainability, the platform required a complete architectural remap, a modernized visual identity, and a total rewriting of its editorial copy.

 

The Strategy: Cross-Functional Leadership & User-Experience Architecture

As the project lead, I orchestrated the end-to-end strategy, tech migration, and content overhaul. Recognizing the complexity of managing a full digital migration under tight resource constraints, I assembled and directed a cross-functional team, combining internal volunteer talent with external professional vendors: 

  • 20+ Page Architectural Remap: I completely overhauled and mapped out a comprehensive user-flow framework spanning over 20 distinct pages, streamlining navigation to ensure potential adopters and donors could reach critical action pages in under three clicks.

  • Agency Management: Directed and managed an outside professional web design and development firm, ensuring the technical milestones, modern layout transitions, and back-end pipelines were executed on schedule.

  • Creative Collaboration: Partnered closely with a professional graphic designer to establish a clean, modern, and visually arresting brand identity that balanced emotional rescue stories with organizational professionalism.

  • SEO & Accessibility Optimization: Championed digital-first best practices by optimizing all site copy for Search Engine Optimization (SEO) to drive organic community discovery, while enforcing strict accessibility standards to ensure the website was inclusive for all users. 

  • Editorial Overhaul: Personally rewrote the site-wide copy across every page, transforming complex shelter metrics and dense operational policies into clear, emotionally resonant, and action-oriented storytelling.

 

The Impact & Results: A Bulletproof Foundation for Growth

The launch of the redesigned platform provided HSNB with a modernized, high-converting digital footprint that completely transformed how the community interacted with the organization:

  • Optimized Pipelines: The simplified user journey eliminated drop-off points, creating a seamless experience for online donors and event ticket buyers. 

  • Sustainable Infrastructure: By establishing clear style guides and content hierarchies, the new site gave our internal volunteer teams a structured framework to easily update adoptable animal profiles and emergency alerts. 

  • Amplified Credibility: The polished, professional presence immediately elevated the shelter's public relations standing, building deep trust with corporate sponsors and major foundation donors.

  • Enduring Digital Legacy: Proving the long-term sustainability of the architecture, my custom website design, core page templates, and a substantial portion of the original page content remain live and operational today at hsnb.org.
