Fundraising: Events & Giving Campaigns

The 2020 End-of-Year Giving Campaign

The Challenge: Securing the Shelter's Annual Financial Foundation

It is a well-established reality in the nonprofit sector that organizations raise the vast majority of their operational funds during the end-of-year holiday season, sometimes generating up to 40% of their annual revenue in November and December alone. For the Humane Society of the North Bay (HSNB), executing a flawless "Giving Season" plan was not just important—it was critical to sustaining our daily animal welfare operations for the upcoming year.

To maximize this window, I attended an industry best-practices webinar hosted by Network for Good and built a highly structured, aggressive 32-touchpoint campaign blueprint. Upon presenting the plan to the board, we recognized that the shelter manager and board members lacked the administrative bandwidth for direct personalized outreach. Demonstrating flexibility and adaptive leadership, I streamlined the strategy into a robust, hands-free 33-touchpoint digital framework that achieved maximum market saturation without overextending our internal team.

The Strategy: A 33-Touchpoint Omni-Channel Blitz & Corporate Match

The comprehensive campaign officially kicked off on October 30 by reintroducing HSNB to the community, highlighting our core mission, and telling the stories of the homeless animals we serve. The campaign ran continuously through November and December, concluding with a celebratory New Year message.

The strategy combined multi-channel storytelling with a massive corporate matching incentive:

  • Advanced Audience Segmentation: Rather than deploying a static, one-size-fits-all email blast, I split our digital messaging pathways. Active donors received customized communications focused on deep gratitude and immediate match matching, while non-donors and lapsed supporters received distinct variations focused on mission education and inviting them back into the shelter family.

  • The #GivingTuesday Global Mobilization: To maximize fundraising momentum in late November, we fully participated in the global day of giving, #GivingTuesday. By pluging our local shelter directly into the international movement, we strategically leveraged their official marketing assets, global media air coverage, and widespread public brand recognition to create an intense, high-converting giving window right after Thanksgiving.

  • The Alumni Photo Strategy: To drive emotional engagement, I actively monitored the HSNB Facebook Alumni page for organic, joyful updates from past adopters. I curated a selection of high-impact holiday photos and securely obtained formal usage permission from the families beforehand. The adopters were thrilled to have their beloved pets featured, which injected authentic community success stories directly into the campaign assets.

Campaign Spotlight: Sourcing Community Success

Two lucky dogs who found their forever homes for the holidays.

By sourcing permission-secured photos from our Facebook Alumni page, these festive updates from Romeo and Arlo provided our community with tangible, heartwarming proof of their donor dollars at work.

  • The Media Mix: Deployed a synchronized blend of emotional storytelling across 33 touchpoints, utilizing targeted email streams, organic social media graphics, direct mail flyers, dedicated website banners, and high-impact video messaging.

  • Content Variety: Kept the community deeply engaged over the 60-day window by rotating through inspiring animal success stories, promoting HSNB merchandise sales, and participating heavily in the global #GivingTuesday movement directly following Thanksgiving.

  • The Corporate Match Anchor: Seamlessly integrated our partnership with Meyer Corporation, a leading cookware and bakeware manufacturer headquartered locally in Vallejo, CA. During their annual Year-End sale, Meyer generously offered to match community donations dollar-for-dollar up to $15,000. I focused our messaging on educating the public about this match, effectively transforming a standard donation into a doubled impact for the animals.

The Impact & Results: Anchoring the Entire Organization

The meticulously planned 60-day blitz achieved historic financial results for the shelter's residents:

  • The Grand Total: From October 30 to December 31, the campaign raised an incredible $91,963 in grassroots and matched funding.

  • The Organizational Lifeline: This single end-of-year push accounted for an astounding 51.24% of HSNB’s total annual revenue for the entire year of 2020, smashing industry averages and securing our financial runway.

  • Community Synergy: By successfully rallying the public to clear the full $15,000 corporate match, the campaign solidified our long-term partnership with Meyer Corporation and proved that our donor base responds powerfully to high-utility, structured campaigns.

Event Chairperson: "Mardi Paws" Gala

The Challenge: Translating Corporate Frameworks to Volunteer Teams

Every year, the Humane Society of the North Bay (HSNB) hosted an annual charity auction as a primary operational fundraiser. In 2019, the event was themed "Mardi Paws." Recognizing my corporate background in global events management, the shelter manager asked me to lead the initiative as the Event Chairperson.

However, leading a team of passionate community volunteers was an entirely new landscape. Unlike corporate settings with dedicated staff and clear reporting lines, a volunteer-led charity event requires deep empathy, constant motivation, and adaptive project management to keep busy individuals aligned and on schedule.

The Strategy: Multidisciplinary Structure and Volunteer Alignment

The ambitious gala itinerary featured a full dinner, a "pooch parade" showcasing adoptable dogs, and two distinct auctions, one silent and one live. To organize the immense operational workload, I established and oversaw nine dedicated volunteer committees:

  • Décor: Creating an immersive, high-energy Mardi Gras atmosphere.

  • Sponsorships & Advertising: Pitching local businesses for corporate underwriting.

  • Ticket Sales: Driving community turnout and table bookings.

  • Procurement: Securing unique goods and experiences for the auctions.

  • Marketing & Promotion: Executing media and digital campaigns, creating video, and designing the program.

  • Volunteers: Recruiting and scheduling day-of support staff.

  • Entertainment: Coordinating live performances, music, and the pooch parade.

  • Food & Beverage: Managing catering, menus, and logistics.

  • Day-of Logistics: Mapping out the venue footprint, timelines, and registration.

The Hurdles: The most complex operational challenges were driving ticket sales, securing local corporate sponsorships, and wrangling busy volunteer committee leads to attend weekly status meetings. By maintaining a supportive, organized environment, building strong personal relationships, and drawing on the institutional knowledge of veteran volunteers, we successfully united the teams as the deadline approached.

The Impact & Results: Shattering Fundraising Records

Despite a few necessary live pivots on the night of the event, the gala was a massive success for the shelter’s operational budget:

  • Net Revenue: The event raised and cleared $28,000 in pure profit for the shelter's animals.

  • Year-over-Year Growth: This total shattered the previous year’s revenue of $19,000, representing a massive 47% increase in fundraising efficiency.

  • Mission Visibility: The pooch parade directly elevated the profile of the shelter’s most vulnerable residents, driving immediate adoption interest and deep community goodwill.
